What We Do in Banbury
Pruning and crown work
Most of our Banbury jobs are pruning. A crown reduction brings a tree that has outgrown the garden back to a manageable size. Crown thinning lets light through without changing the tree’s shape, and crown lifting clears the lower branches from paths, drives and windows. We prune to BS 3998, the British Standard for tree work, and choose the cut for the species rather than taking a set amount off every tree.
Cherry and plum are best pruned in late summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease, and birch bleeds sap if cut in winter or spring. Our pruning guide covers the seasons in detail.
Tree removal and felling
Removal is sometimes the right call: a tree that is dead, diseased, leaning towards a house, or simply in the wrong place. In a terraced back garden there is rarely room to fell a tree in one piece, so we take it down in sections and lower each one on ropes. That protects fences, sheds and your neighbours’ gardens. We clear the timber and branches as part of the job unless you want to keep the logs.
Stump grinding
After a removal, we grind the stump below ground level so the area can be turfed, planted or built on. Grinding takes most stumps out in under an hour and doesn’t disturb the surrounding ground the way digging does. If you’re deciding whether to tackle a stump yourself, our guide to DIY versus professional stump removal sets out the costs of each.
Hedges
Leylandii, laurel and privet hedges grow fast, and one missed year can put a hedge beyond a ladder. We trim and reduce domestic and commercial hedges, and we’ll tell you before we start whether an overgrown hedge will recover from a hard cut. Leylandii won’t regrow from bare old wood, so cutting one back too far leaves a permanent brown face.
Storm damage
A limb on a roof or a tree across a drive needs dealing with quickly and safely. Call us on 07943 797110 for an emergency call-out.
Protected Trees in Banbury and the Villages
Cherwell District Council is the planning authority for Banbury and every village listed above, so the rules are the same whether you live in Grimsbury or Hook Norton.
- Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) protect individual trees, groups or woodland. You need the council’s consent before pruning or felling a TPO tree.
- Conservation Areas cover Banbury’s historic centre and many of the surrounding villages, including Adderbury, Bloxham, Deddington and Hook Norton. Before working on any tree in a conservation area with a trunk more than 7.5cm across at 1.5m above the ground, you must give the council six weeks’ notice.
Unauthorised work on a protected tree can bring a substantial fine, and the liability sits with the owner as well as the contractor. We check a tree’s status before quoting, and if consent or notice is needed we submit it to Cherwell on your behalf.
Choosing a Tree Surgeon in Banbury
Whoever you hire, ask to see proof of public liability insurance and the team’s NPTC certificates for chainsaw and aerial work. Get the quote in writing. Be wary of anyone who knocks on your door offering cheap tree work, a common approach for rogue traders. Our guide to finding a reliable tree surgeon covers the red flags in more detail.
All our operatives hold current NPTC qualifications for chainsaw use and aerial work, and we carry full public liability insurance. We’re happy to show both before any work starts.
